The Portal Malfunctioned, and I Ended Up in the Jurassic Period

(Or, “How I Found Myself in the Age of the Dinosaurs—And Survived”)

It was supposed to be a simple trip—one quick jump back to the Cretaceous period to snap a few photos of some herbivores, then back to the present before dinner. What could go wrong? Well, apparently, everything.

I should’ve known better.

“Max, are you sure this is going to work?” Sam asked, eyeing the device in my hand suspiciously.

“I’m positive,” I said, checking the settings one last time. “The portal’s set for the Cretaceous period. We’ll go, take a few photos, and be back in no time. We’ve got it all under control.”

Sam rolled her eyes. “Yeah, because you’ve never had an adventure go sideways before.”

I grinned. “This time, it’s foolproof. We’re just going to step through, and—”

Before I could finish, the familiar hum of the portal kicked up, and the world around us blurred.

A Malfunction in the System

I had set the portal device to land us in the Cretaceous, but the second we stepped through, something went wrong. The machine sputtered. The air crackled. And before we knew it, we were no longer standing in the familiar Cretaceous jungle.

I blinked. We weren’t in the right place. This wasn’t the warm, dense world of the Cretaceous. It was… something older.

“Where are we?” Sam asked, her voice tight. “This doesn’t look like the Cretaceous. It looks… different.”

I scanned the environment, realizing what was wrong. The trees were taller, more primitive. The plants were less developed, and everything felt… ancient. I checked the device, and my stomach dropped.

“Sam, I think we’ve landed in the Jurassic period instead.”

Sam raised an eyebrow. “The what period?”

“The Jurassic,” I said, feeling a wave of panic. “We’re not in the Cretaceous—this is way earlier. The dinosaurs here are going to be a lot different. We’ve gotta be careful.”

The Jurassic Period: A Different World

The Jurassic period was like a time capsule—a world where the Earth was still figuring itself out. The air was different, cooler, and the plants around us looked more ancient, like something straight out of a science fiction movie. Giant cycads and ferns dotted the landscape, and in the distance, I could hear the faint calls of creatures I didn’t recognize.

Suddenly, a huge shadow passed overhead. I looked up and froze. A massive Pteranodon was gliding above us, its wingspan stretching out like a living shadow. But it wasn’t a Tyrannosaurus—it wasn’t even a Triceratops. We were in a completely different world, surrounded by dinosaurs that hadn’t even been on our radar until now.

“Max,” Sam whispered, looking up. “That’s not… a T-Rex, is it?”

I shook my head. “No. But that’s a Pteranodon, and it’s a lot bigger than I expected. This place is older—way older. And we’re not supposed to be here.”

The Jurassic Dinosaurs: A New Set of Challenges

The dinosaurs of the Jurassic period were much more ancient and diverse than the ones I’d seen before. The massive Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus roamed the land, their long necks towering above the trees. And we were standing right in the middle of it.

1. The Sauropods: Giants of the Jurassic

We encountered the giant Brachiosaurus, a herbivore with a neck so long it could reach the treetops with ease. These were some of the largest creatures ever to walk the Earth, but they were surprisingly calm, just quietly munching on leaves.

2. The Carnivores: The Real Threats

But it wasn’t all peaceful. The Allosaurus, a large carnivore, was much more aggressive and unpredictable than the herbivores. It prowled the area, its eyes scanning for anything it could consider prey. We had to keep our distance, moving stealthily behind trees and rocks to avoid being spotted.

3. The Flying Reptiles: Pterosaurs

The Pteranodon wasn’t the only flying reptile we saw. Huge, bat-like wings filled the sky, and we couldn’t help but watch in awe as they soared overhead. These creatures ruled the skies, and we had to be careful not to get too close. Who knew if one of them would mistake us for prey?

The Unexpected Problem: Getting Stuck in the Jurassic

At first, the plan was simple—take a few photos, document the wildlife, and head back home. But the malfunctioning portal device had other ideas. The screen flickered, and the hum grew faint, then stopped entirely.

“It’s dead,” I said, staring at the screen. “We’re stuck here.”

Sam’s eyes went wide. “What? Are you serious? We can’t be stuck here! I don’t even want to be in the Jurassic—let alone stuck in it!”

I checked the device again, pressing random buttons in desperation, but it wasn’t responding. We were on our own, with no way of getting back.

Jake’s Take

Jake raised his eyebrows when I told him the story. “Wait, you time-traveled again? And ended up in the Jurassic period? That’s nuts, Max. How did you even survive?”

“Well, Jake,” I said, trying to sound casual, “it was all about staying calm and keeping an eye on the skies. I may have panicked a little when the T-Rex didn’t show up, but we managed to find some friendly dinosaurs to help out.”

Jake snorted. “I’d never survive. I’m pretty sure I’d get eaten by a Pteranodon the minute I got there.”

“Trust me,” I said, “you wouldn’t be the first one. The Jurassic is full of surprises. But next time, we’re sticking to the Cretaceous. Or maybe no time travel at all. Ever again.”

Sam’s Insight

“Honestly, I can’t believe you got us stuck in the Jurassic period, Max,” Sam said, shaking her head. “But it was kind of incredible, right? Like, actually seeing those dinosaurs in person… really up close. The Brachiosaurus was insane.”

I nodded, the thrill of the adventure still fresh in my mind. “It was definitely worth it… but next time, let’s make sure the portal works before we get on it.”

Field Notes From Max

  • Biggest Surprise: Realizing we were stuck in the Jurassic period—for real.
  • Coolest Discovery: The sheer scale of the Brachiosaurus and how different the dinosaurs were from the ones in the Cretaceous.
  • What’s Next: I’m going to figure out how to fix this portal. If I ever go back to the Jurassic again, I’m making sure it’s on purpose—and with a working portal!

Somehow, we survived the Jurassic period, and I learned a lot about what makes this era of dinosaurs so unique. But the truth is, I was relieved when I finally got the portal working again and we made it home. The Jurassic is amazing, but I’m not planning on getting stuck there again anytime soon.🦖🌿🔧
